Education for citizenship

My constituency is based within Daventry
The member for this constituency is Mr Tim Boswell with the conservative party
Northamptonshire county council
Mainly dominated by Lib Dem's and conservatives.

I do not really have a particular attitude towards people who do not plan to vote as it would seem a bit hypocritical considering I do not plan to vote myself. This is because I am rather unaware of what each party plans to do as I am not interested in the area of politics and so do not pay attention to it. If I was to vote I would probably be more inclined to vote for the Lib Dem's as they have actually made the effort to send out letters to students to inform us of what there plans are and reasons to vote for them. But hasn't pushed me to find out more about how to vote.

These pictures show that within my location there is very little deprivation in the sense of employment, heath, education and living environment, however in saying this, it does not necessarily mean it is sustainable, as within the area there is very little methods of sustainable transport because buses only come once an hour and so the majority of people drive everywhere which isn't a very sustainable way for the community to travel.

Transport problems

Currently although there are many negatives towards personal motorized transport these are out weighed by reasons to use it. For example, bus's can often come at inconvenient times or even perhaps stop running by the time you need it, not only this but you often have to set off for your destination about 30 Min's earlier to ensure you get there on time. Not only this but at some places public transport is actually more expensive than it would be to drive and so not only is it a inconvenience but also more expensive, this then does not encourage anyone to use more sustainable methods of transport.
Therefore to encourage more sustainable transport they need to lower the costs and have them run more frequently to make it more convenient for people.
Secondly even by doing this many people are unlikely to do this as they still have to go out of their way to get to public transport, so the government should encourage large companies that have people many employees working 9-5 throughout the week to do car sharing by finding individuals who live in nearby areas to each other, they could do this by limiting parking to only being avaliable to those who car share or by rewarding them in some way. This then cuts down on money and petrol being used, whilst still being convenient and rewarding people for doing so, this could then cut down on the amount of cars on the road.

Christmas sustainability

What do you think? is christmas unsustainable? How would it all work in a changed world? should do-gooders leave our festivals alone.

I think it is hard to disagree that christmas is a very unsustainable time of year and does encourage excessive packing, eating, drinking etc, however without it many of us miss out on the opportunity to meet up with friends and families and its that one time of year we are given that excuse to do so, and so with out it we miss out on alot of opportunities to reconnect with people. And so I think the benefits of the festivals far out weigh the negatives so do-gooders should us be as its only at point in the year this is an issue the rest of the time everything runs smoother.

power of the media and television

To what extent do the best selling newspapers cover stories related to serious issues? To what is there role to do so? Does the tabloid media and low budget entertainment have too much power and influence in this country.

Although the best selling newspapers cover stories related to serious issues these are often very one sided and cause emotional reactions to them compared to other newspapers like the independent and the guardian. For example in a situation where a murder has occurred and details of the incident and possible suspect. The sun would commonly write something like: Husband violently attacks his loving wife stabbing her 6 times, he smiles and laughs as he chucks her out of the window. This encourages the emotional response of hatred for the person. Where as the independent would try to be much less biased: The husband has been taken into custody as the main suspect for the murder of his wife who was stabbed and then threw through a window. This approach allows the reader to form there own opinion of the situation and whether they believe the husband did it or not.
However without the media we would not be informed of these things at all so it is their role to keep us informed of these situations.
Low budget entertainment such as soaps often bring in huge amounts of viewers everyday, this is because it creates a fictional story based on serious issues that we commonly do not hear about and do not know the details of, for example serial killers, rapes affairs etc, things that in everyday life we don't get to see or hear about and we don't see or know the details, where as within tv series we get to see the crime first hand and we know what is happening and the details are absolute. But in everyday life without seeing or knowing the person it is alot harder for us to become attached to the situation. Due to this soaps can have a major influence on the way that people think about different situations.

To what extent do you think it is your duty as a citizen to be informed? are you informed? how do you get to be informed about serious issues? To what extent do you think that you should leave the complicated decisions to others?

I think as a citizen it is very important to be informed because if we are not informed we'll never be aware of what issues are occuring, and if we are unaware of issues occuring we are able to do nothing to stop it. However on saying that I believe many of us are not informed on issues and this is because they don't expect us to doing anything about them. The times we do get informed about issues is usually done through the media such as television, newspapers and now even facebook can be used as a way to find out about issues.
I think the majority of the time complicated decisions should be left up to the experts and proffessionals as they know the best way to deal with the situation, however sometimes it should be down to the public as a whole to decide how to react to something

al gore review

I definately think it deserved some acknowledgement as it did raise alot of awareness to the extent of which climate change is affecting the environment.
However how affective it has actually been to influencing people to change i think has been minimal and could possibly have been more influential.
The whole film was very negatively framed where as if they had put it more in a posative light of things that could be done to try and prevent the increase of global warming it may have swayed more people to take action, but the video betrays an impossible situation that nobody believes they could have an affect on stopping it.

overall i think the film did a great job at raising awareness of the crisis, however did very little in providing people with a solution or methods in which they can help lower climate change and so many people will not be phased by the film, as i didnt change anything about the way i live my lifestyle even straight after watching the film so i'm highly unlikely to start now a week after watching it.
